Cellular therapies may result in distinct acute toxicities that, if not promptly recognized and managed, can lead to severe consequences, including fatality.

Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS) represents the most prevalent adverse event in cellular therapy, varying in severity from mild constitutional symptoms to a life-threatening syndrome involving multi-organ dysfunction. Neurotoxicity, initially referred to as CAR-Related Encephalopathy Syndrome (CRES) and now updated as Immune effector Cell-Associated Neurotoxicity Syndrome (ICANS), is the second most common adverse event and can coincide with CRS. To enhance patient safety, a multidisciplinary working group was established to address these concerns, resulting in the creation of new grading systems and treatment guidelines integrated into the CARTOX mobile application.

The CARTOX app aids users in assessing toxicity grades, managing adverse events, and offering guidance on appropriate antimicrobial prophylaxis for patients undergoing immune effector cell therapy. Through this tool, clinicians can more easily differentiate between cytokine release syndrome and neurotoxicity and assign appropriate grades to these toxicities.
